Matcha has been part of Japanese culture for over 800 years. In the last two decades, Western science has begun to examine its composition in detail. Matcha is one of the most nutritionally dense beverages available, and its makeup is different from other caffeinated drinks.

The reason is what you consume. Unlike regular green tea, where leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha is the whole leaf dissolved in water. Every compound the plant produced, its antioxidants, amino acids, chlorophyll, vitamins, and natural caffeine, goes into your cup. This whole-leaf format shapes matcha's nutritional profile in ways a conventional steeped tea cannot match.

L-theanine, the amino acid in matcha

L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found almost exclusively in the Camellia sinensis plant. It is the compound most associated with the distinctive character of matcha, and a common reason people who switch from coffee describe a different quality of alertness.

Research published in Nutritional Neuroscience reported that a combination of L-theanine and caffeine improved speed and accuracy on cognitive tasks more than either compound alone in the conditions studied. Research has also associated L-theanine with alpha brain wave activity, the state linked to relaxed alertness. These are research findings about the compound, not a promise about what a given drink will do for any individual.

Matcha contains significantly more L-theanine than regular green tea because of shade-growing. When the plant is deprived of direct sunlight for three to four weeks before harvest, it produces more L-theanine in the leaves. Ceremonial grade matcha, which uses shade-grown, first-harvest leaves, contains a high concentration of L-theanine. Aceae matcha is shade-grown to this standard.

EGCG and catechins: what the research looks at

Matcha is one of the richest dietary sources of catechins, a class of polyphenol found in the Camellia sinensis plant. The most studied is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the subject of many laboratory and clinical studies.

Because you consume the entire leaf when drinking matcha rather than a water infusion, you receive more of these catechins per serve than from steeped green tea. A 2003 study from the University of Colorado, often cited in matcha research, found the EGCG available from a matcha sample was higher than from a particular commercially available brewed green tea. It is worth being precise: that comparison was with specific tea products, not all green tea universally. The reliable takeaway is that the whole-leaf format delivers more catechins per cup than steeped tea.

EGCG has been studied for its role in oxidative stress and cardiovascular research. A 2016 review in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research reported that regular green tea catechin intake was associated with modest reductions in LDL cholesterol in some human trials. These are associations from research and the picture is still developing, not certainties about any individual or product.

Chlorophyll, the colour of quality

The vivid jade green of ceremonial grade matcha is chlorophyll, the pigment plants produce to capture sunlight. Shade-growing increases chlorophyll: the plant responds to reduced light by making more of it. This is why high-quality matcha is a deeper, more saturated green than lower grades, and why colour is a reliable indicator of quality and freshness. Consuming the whole leaf means you receive the chlorophyll with every serve.

Natural caffeine

Matcha contains caffeine, roughly 35 to 70 mg per standard serve depending on the amount used. That places it below an espresso (around 60 to 90 mg) and above a cup of steeped green tea (around 20 to 45 mg).

How that caffeine is experienced may differ. Research suggests the presence of L-theanine can moderate the absorption of caffeine, and many people who find coffee disrupts their sleep report a different experience with matcha at a similar dose. Green tea catechins in metabolism research

Green tea catechins, particularly EGCG, have been studied for effects on energy expenditure and fat oxidation. A meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that green tea catechin intake was associated with modest increases in energy expenditure, most noticeably alongside moderate exercise. These effects are described as modest, not dramatic. Matcha is not a weight loss product, and these findings concern green tea catechins in research, not a result Aceae promises.

Why ceremonial grade matters

Not all matcha has the same composition. Ceremonial grade matcha, first harvest, shade-grown, stone-ground, contains higher concentrations of L-theanine, catechins, and chlorophyll than culinary grade made from later harvests with less shade.
